You should check out the Mutual MS-6030. Its a great value in a gun safe. It offers the best of both worlds. Outstanding burglary protection and a 1 hour fire rating!

If the guns hold sentimental value, the best bet is to make sure that you buy a gun safe has at least a one hour fire rating. The fire rated safes are fire resistant, not fire proof so the higher the fire rating, the better chance you have of saving your guns. As far as your friend only getting half of the value of his guns, the amount that the guns can be insured for depends upon the U.L. fire rating as well. The higher the U.L. fire rating, the more you can insure your guns and valuables. AMSEC and Mutual are both two very good gun safe manufacturers.

The gun safes I have seen also have protection against fire. For those of us who don't have kids, we are more concerned about making sure our guns are safe from a fire. I once knew a guy that lost all his guns in a house fire and his insurance company gave him half of what his guns were really worth. Some of the guns were given to him by his grandpa and there just isn't anything you can do about replacing something like that.
