About Project ChildSafe
Every year, thousands of accidents, suicides, and thefts involve unsecured firearms. Project ChildSafe is the National Shooting Sports Foundation's response, a nationwide program built on free safety kits, educational resources, and community engagement with law enforcement and retailers across the country.
Since launching in 1999, Project ChildSafe has become one of the largest firearm safety programs in the United States, recognized by federal agencies, state and local governments, and the firearm industry itself. The program is funded by NSSF, partner manufacturers, and individual donations from supporters who believe responsible storage is a personal responsibility every gun owner shares.
Significant Achievements
Project ChildSafe has built a measurable track record of impact over more than two decades:
The "Own It? Respect It. Secure It." campaign has reached millions of Americans through television, print, social media, and schools, building a culture of accountability around safe storage at home, in vehicles, and on the road.

How Project ChildSafe Expands Firearm Safety Nationwide
Project ChildSafe operates through a coordinated network of partnerships. NSSF partners with police departments, retailers, firearm instructors, and community organizations to put free safety kits, educational campaigns, and support materials directly into the hands of gun owners and their families.
The program's reach has been recognized by major media outlets including CNN Health and academic institutions like the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, which has highlighted the role of secure storage in suicide prevention.
