Combating Humidity

No matter where you live there’s bound to be some humidity inside your safe that has the potential to ruin your valuables if left unchecked. There are a lot of different options available that range from everyday items like kitty litter to electronic dehumidifiers that you can use to combat humidity in your home or business safe. How seriously you take the threat of humidity is up to you and the valuables you keep inside. What items are most susceptible to damage by humidity though? Here we’ll look at what items need the most care and a few different options for how you can combat humidity in your safe.

Firearms

One of the most susceptible items to humidity damage is firearms. The metal parts can rust if left unchecked long enough in a safe without humidity control and even the wooden stocks will deteriorate over time. This is especially important for antique firearms but should be respected for all firearms when maintaining a high standard of quality is important. Firearms are especially important because enough degradation can eventually impact the operability over time which could put you in a dicey situation for self-defense.

Documents

Another important item that merits careful humidity control documents. This depends somewhat on the quality of the paper but humidity can lead to mold which can very quickly lead to ruined documents. Here humidity control is especially important because documents can often be worth more than their weight in gold and typically have a very important purpose especially if you’re keeping them in a safe.

What Are My Options?

When it comes down to it there are a lot of different ways to control humidity. As mentioned earlier even kitty litter will work in a pinch. The more common option is usually desiccant packs that can be purchased online or in almost any safe retail store. A more permanent option would be to install an electronic dehumidifier but this does require a power source and a way to get a cord into your safe. Some actually may run on batteries but this might not be viable for extended periods. It’s important to make sure you take humidity seriously before it’s too late and be prepared to handle it, especially if you live in a humid climate.
