TL-30X6 Safes: Six-Sided UL Burglary Protection

A TL-30X6 safe is tested and certified by Underwriters Laboratories (UL) to resist 30 minutes of concentrated attack using professional-grade tools on all six sides of the safe. That includes the door, back, top, bottom, and both side walls. This is what separates TL-30X6 from a standard TL-30 rating, where only the door is tested to resist the full 30 minutes.

The "TL-30 x 6" designation means the 30-minute tool resistance test is conducted on all six sides. A safe with this rating is designed to offer full six-sided body and door protection against attack by common mechanical and electrical hand tools, and any combination of these means.

Construction Requirements

To earn the TL-30X6 label, a safe must meet UL's construction standards: a UL Listed Group 2M, 1, 1R combination lock or Type 1 electronic lock, body walls equivalent to at least 1 inch of open hearth steel with a minimum tensile strength of 50,000 PSI, and walls fastened in a manner equivalent to continuous 1/4-inch penetration weld at the same strength. The safe must also weigh at least 750 pounds or include anchoring instructions for permanent mounting.

Performance Requirements

During testing, UL engineers attack the safe with common hand tools, picking tools, mechanical and portable electric tools, grinding points, carbide drills, pressure-applying devices, abrasive cutting wheels, and power saws. They receive the safe's blueprints in advance and study the construction for vulnerabilities before the attack begins. The safe must resist entry for a net working time of 30 minutes on each side. "Entry" means opening the door or creating a 6 square-inch opening entirely through the body, door, or front face.

You can watch UL engineers testing a safe in this video.

For anyone protecting high-value assets (jewelry inventory, cash reserves, precious metals, collectibles, or critical business records), TL-30X6 is one of the highest practical security ratings available.

Why All Six Sides Matter

Modern TL-rated safes have construction standards that apply to the body as well as the door. The difference with TL-30X6 is that all six sides (door, back, top, bottom, and both walls) are tested to resist the full 30 minutes of attack. On a standard TL-30, only the door is held to that duration.

That gap matters in most real-world installations, where a safe is accessible from more than one angle. A burglar with access to a shared wall, the floor below, or even the back of a closet can target a surface that wasn't tested to the same standard and bypass even a well-rated front door. The longer a break-in takes, the greater the risk of detection and apprehension, so requiring the full 30 minutes on every surface is what makes TL-30X6 the rating insurance carriers and security consultants specify for high-risk environments.

Who Needs a TL-30X6 Safe?

Jewelers and Precious Metals Dealers

Jewelry stores are frequently required by their insurance carrier to store inventory in a TL-30X6 rated safe. Insurers like Jewelers Mutual set minimum safe ratings as a condition of coverage, and TL-30X6 is typically the threshold for insuring inventory valued at $275,000 to $500,000 (depending on whether an alarm system is present). If you are opening or outfitting a jewelry business, check with your insurer early. The required safe rating will likely shape your entire security setup.

Pharmacies and Healthcare Facilities

The DEA requires a minimum of UL TL-30 with a Group 1R lock for storing Schedule I and II controlled substances. While TL-30 meets the baseline requirement, many pharmacies and healthcare facilities choose TL-30X6 for the added protection on all six sides, particularly in locations where the safe may be accessible from adjacent rooms or floors.

Cannabis Dispensaries

State regulations for cannabis businesses often mandate high-security storage for both product and cash. A TL-30 rated safe is often sufficient to meet compliance requirements, but depending on the total value of stored inventory and cash, a TL-30X6 may be worth the upgrade for the added protection on all six sides and the higher insurable limits.

Homeowners with High-Value Collections

If you are storing jewelry, watches, coins, or other valuables worth more than $100,000 at home, a TL-30X6 safe offers a level of protection that standard residential safes cannot match. For context, a TL-15 rated safe can typically support coverage up to $100,000 without a burglar alarm, or up to $200,000 with one. A TL-30X6 steps that up to approximately $275,000 without an alarm, or $500,000 with one. You can see the full breakdown on our burglary ratings and insurance guidelines page.

Banks and Financial Institutions

Banks sometimes use TL-30X6 safes for cash storage when the safe needs to resist a multi-sided attack and insurance underwriters require it. Safe deposit operations and vault rooms generally rely on different protection schemes, so they are less common applications for TL-30X6 ratings.

TL-30X6 Insurable Value Guidelines

These figures are based on industry conversations with major insurers including Jewelers Mutual and Chubb. Actual coverage depends on your specific policy, but these guidelines help frame the protection level a TL-30X6 safe provides.

Condition

Approximate Insurable Limit

TL-30X6 with alarm system

Up to $500,000

TL-30X6 without alarm system

Up to $275,000

For comparison, a standard TL-30 (door only) supports approximately $195,000 without an alarm and $375,000 with one. Moving to TL-30X6 meaningfully increases your insurable capacity.

What to Look for in a TL-30X6 Safe

Construction

TL-30X6 safes are typically constructed with two layers of steel containing high-compression composite materials. This layered construction resists drilling, cutting, and prying from every direction. Look for safes with reinforced door frames, protected bolt chambers, and drill-resistant hard plates.

Fire Protection

Most TL-30X6 safes also include fire protection, though the specific rating varies by manufacturer and testing method. Many models carry a 2-hour fire rating, meaning the interior stays below the damage threshold for paper during extended exposure to high temperatures. If you are storing both high-value items and important documents, look for a TL-30X6 with a verified fire rating so a single safe covers both threats.

Locking Mechanisms

TL-30X6 safes are available with UL-listed mechanical combination locks, electronic keypads, or dual-control locks (requiring two people to open). For DEA compliance, a Group 1R mechanical lock is required. For commercial applications, dual-control locks add a layer of accountability. Your choice depends on the application and any regulatory requirements.

Weight and Anchoring

These are heavy safes, often weighing between 2,000 and 10,000+ pounds depending on size and construction. That weight is part of the security. Nobody is carrying one of these out of a building. Professional installation and floor bolting are strongly recommended to ensure proper placement and anchoring.

Delivery and Installation

Because nearly all TL-30X6 safes exceed 2,000 pounds, your receiving location needs either a forklift or a raised loading dock to take delivery. Standard freight liftgates max out at 2,000 pounds and can't handle this weight class. Safe & Vault Store includes free curbside freight delivery on all orders, and for inside placement we connect you with licensed, insured safe installers in your area who have the specialized equipment to move and anchor these safes properly. We have helped coordinate delivery and installation on over 150,000 safes nationwide since 2007.
