Here at Safe and Vault Store, we pride ourselves on carrying the very best safes and vaults available. One of the newer innovations in the safe market is the biometric safe, and it's still one of the coolest categories we sell. Biometric safes are designed for quick and secure access when you need your items in a hurry. They use biometric technology, so you never need to remember a tricky combination. Your fingerprint is the combination.
What Is Biometrics?
Biometrics is how computers and other machines recognize a specific human based on an intrinsic and unique physical or behavioral trait. The most common application is identity access management, which is exactly what a biometric safe does.
The physical traits commonly used in biometrics include:
- Fingerprints (the trait our biometric safes use)
- Face recognition (such as passport control)
- DNA
- Palm print
- Hand geometry
- Iris recognition
- Odor and scent recognition
Behavioral traits sometimes used include typing rhythm, gait, and voice. Biometrics can accurately identify a person because these physical and behavioral traits are unique to each individual. No two people share the exact same fingerprint, with the possible exception of identical twins, who also share the same DNA.
How Biometric Safes Work
When a biometric safe records and stores a specific fingerprint, it can accurately identify a match and unlock the safe. Enrolling a fingerprint typically takes seconds: place your finger on the scanner, follow the on-screen or LED prompts, and the safe stores the print for future access.
Most biometric safes can store multiple fingerprints, letting you enroll multiple family members, a spouse, or a specific set of fingers on your own hand for redundancy. Higher-end models store 20 to 80 unique prints.
Have Biometric Locks Gotten More Reliable?
In the past, some early biometric safes had accuracy complaints, with occasional false positives or failed reads. These issues have largely been solved with newer sensor generations. Modern biometric scanners use higher-resolution capacitive sensors that read the ridge patterns more precisely, and most safes still include a backup PIN keypad and physical override keys as a fallback in case the sensor fails or the batteries die.
