Browning safes are built by ProSteel Security Products, Browning's exclusive safe manufacturer since 1983. ProSteel began in 1947 as Provo Steel & Supply in Utah and now produces Browning's residential safes, high-security containers, and storm-rated doors. Browning's premium series, including the 1878, Medallion, Silver, Platinum, Hunter, Hell's Canyon, and U.S. Series, are made in the USA. You can browse them alongside other American-built brands in our gun safes made in the USA collection.
The Browning name itself dates to 1878, when John Moses Browning began designing firearms in Ogden, Utah. The flagship 1878 Series takes its name from that founding year.
Browning organizes its gun safes into series that step up in steel, fire protection, and interior finish. Long gun capacities run from 10 in the compact Theftgard models to 65 in the extra-wide versions of the 1878, Hell's Canyon, Medallion, Silver, and Platinum series.
| Fire Rating (as listed) | Browning Series |
|---|---|
| 30 minutes | Theftgard |
| 60 minutes | Yellowstone, FMJ |
| 80 minutes | Hunter |
| 95 minutes | Sporter, HAWG, Mark V Blackout |
| 100 minutes | Silver, U.S. Series |
| 110 minutes | Rawhide, Hell's Canyon, Medallion, 1878 Series |
A few reference points as you compare. The Browning YS23 Yellowstone is a popular first full-size safe, with room for 23 long guns and a 60-minute fire rating. The Browning SP33 Sporter sits in the middle of the lineup and is one of the most commonly chosen sizes. For larger collections, the Browning HC49 Hell's Canyon moves up to a 110-minute fire rating, and the 1878 Series 49T adds the hand-finished interiors of Browning's flagship line. The Medallion, Silver, and Platinum series round out the made-in-USA premium tier with upgraded interiors and finish options, and several series offer special editions such as Pheasants Forever and Stars & Stripes graphics. Every Browning safe is backed by a lifetime warranty against fire damage and break-ins.
Browning also builds a TL-30 rated gun safe for genuinely high-value collections. TL-30 is a UL burglary rating, meaning the door withstood a 30-minute attack test with professional tools. A true TL rating is rare in a gun safe and more protection than most residential collections need, so for the large majority of buyers a standard Browning series is the right call.
Browning's best-known feature is the DPX door storage system, which mounts long gun and handgun storage on the door panel so the interior shelving stays free for ammunition, optics, documents, and other valuables. On most models you can pull a rifle from the door rack without moving anything else. Inside, the AXIS adjustable shelving lets you reconfigure the interior as your collection changes, and Scope Saver racks on select models hold scoped rifles without removing the optics.
The security hardware is built around Browning's Force Deflector locking system, which routes the force of a pry attack away from the lock mechanism, backed by Pry-Stop end bolts at the door edges. For fire protection, Browning uses ThermaBlock fire insulation layered inside the body and a heat-activated Palusol door seal that expands to close the door gap when temperatures rise.
Browning fire ratings come from the manufacturer's own furnace testing rather than a UL fire label, which is standard for the gun safe category. The U.S. Series, for example, is rated to withstand 1,680°F for 100 minutes. As a practical rule, if you are within about 15 minutes of a fire department, a 60-minute rating is usually enough, while rural properties with longer response times should lean toward the 95, 100, and 110-minute series. Our gun safe fire ratings guide explains how the testing works in more detail.
This collection also includes the rest of Browning's security lineup. ProSteel home safes like the Browning PSD14 Medium Fireproof Home Safe cover documents, cash, and jewelry in a smaller footprint; you can compare them with other brands in our fireproof home safes collection. Browning vault doors secure walk-in gun rooms and safe rooms, in clamshell and standard styles with in-swing and out-swing options, such as the Browning Standard Out-Swing Vault Door. The Vanguard and SRV-6 security doors carry a FEMA 320 rating for tornado and hurricane shelters.
Buy one size larger than your current collection needs. Listed capacities are based on slim long guns, and scoped rifles, pistol racks, and stored valuables fill an interior faster than the number suggests. If you are debating between a 33 and a 49, the 49 is almost always the better long-term buy.
Plan to anchor your safe. Bolting it to the floor keeps a burglar from tipping it over to attack the door edges or hauling it away. The longer a break-in takes, the greater the burglar's risk of getting caught.
Manage moisture from day one. Gun safe doors are not airtight, so the interior follows the temperature and humidity of the room around it. A dehumidifier or a renewable desiccant like the Eva-Dry 333 protects your firearms from rust inside the safe.
Delivery is free on every Browning safe, with curbside freight delivery as the standard service.
Browning safes are made by ProSteel, Browning's exclusive safe partner since 1983. The premium series, including the 1878, Medallion, Silver, Platinum, Hunter, Hell's Canyon, and U.S. Series, are made in the USA.
Browning gun safes are fire-resistant rather than literally fireproof. Each series carries a rating for how long it is built to withstand furnace testing, from 30 minutes on the Theftgard up to 110 minutes on the Rawhide, Hell's Canyon, Medallion, and 1878 Series. No gun safe protects its contents in every fire; the rating describes tested time at temperature.
Browning capacities run from 10 to 65 long guns. If you are between sizes, choose the larger one. Safes fill faster than expected, and buying the right size once costs less than upgrading later.
