6 Safes for 6 Very Different Storage Situations

The Whiskey Vault Mini and a selection of safes for different storage situations

Last updated: August 2026

The right safe depends entirely on what you're storing, where you're putting it, and how you'll use it. A college student in a dorm room needs something totally different from a firearms collector, a whiskey enthusiast, or a homeowner who wants a firearm concealed in a closet. Here are six safes we sell for six very different situations, each with the specs and the honest use case for who it fits.

Dorm rooms, RVs, tight spaces

Stealth Dorm Safe V5.0

$299.99

The Stealth Dorm Safe is built for one very specific problem: college students living in dorm rooms with laptops, phones, and other high-value electronics that keep disappearing. It's real steel (not plastic), vertical form factor so it slides under a desk or into a closet, and includes a security cable for anyone who can't drill into their landlord's floor.

Inside, three rubberized shelves keep smaller items from shifting, and there's room for a laptop up to 18 inches. Two pass-through cord holes in the back mean you can charge your laptop, phone, or tablet while they're locked inside. The lock is a UL-listed high-security electronic lock (NL series) that runs on a standard 9V battery replaceable from outside the safe.

Key specs: 20" H x 7" W x 14" D, 35 lbs, 18" laptop capacity, 1-year parts and labor warranty. Bolt-down holes on four sides, or use the included security cable to anchor to a bed frame or desk post.

Budget fire-rated gun safe

AMSEC TF5517E5 30-Minute Gun & Rifle Safe

$1,267.50

The TF5517E5 is AMSEC's entry point into fire-rated gun safes. It's an honest choice for a first-time buyer in an urban or suburban home where structural fires typically get knocked down within 20 to 30 minutes. For anyone in a wildfire zone, a rural area with slower fire response, or storing an irreplaceable collection, we'd point you at a 60-minute or longer rating instead. But for the target buyer, this is a legitimate value.

Build quality is what you'd expect from AMSEC at this tier: solid steel body and door, an ESL5 electronic lock, and interior organization for around 17 long guns realistically. It's honest quality for the price, and AMSEC's brand track record means the fire rating is real and tested, not marketing-only.

Best fit: First-time gun safe buyer, urban or suburban location, budget capped around $1,300. If you need more fire protection, jump to the Fort Knox Protector 6026 below or ask us about the Hollon BHS-16E (90-minute fire, similar price bracket).

Luxury display for fine spirits

The Whiskey Vault Mini

$3,680

The Whiskey Vault Mini is not a traditional safe. It's a display-and-security piece for whiskey collectors who want their prized bottles visible and locked at the same time. Steel plate construction, a machined aluminum tri-spoke handle, and a 19mm bulletproof glass window that shows off 10 to 15 bottles of your finest spirits.

The lock is a UL-certified La Gard electronic lock, and each unit is individually numbered. Custom airbrushed artwork on the inside of the door is available as an add-on. Handcrafted in Taiwan and shipped directly from the manufacturer, so plan for import duties (typically 5-10% of purchase price) and factor in a longer lead time than a domestic safe.

Best fit: Whiskey enthusiasts, bars and clubs, cigar lounges, restaurants securing top-shelf inventory, or anyone who wants collection-grade display security for spirits. Sized to fit most countertops or standalone bars.

Key specs: 18" H x 23" W x 12" D, 110 lbs, holds 10-15 bottles, 5-year service warranty on mechanical and electronic components.

Premium heavy-duty gun safe

Fort Knox Protector 6026 Gun Safe

$4,785

Eleven 1-1/2" solid steel locking bolts on all four sides of the door.

Security features that matter: UL RSC burglary rating, drill deflector bolt guards, a FOIL mechanical backup relocker, and a S&G Group II mechanical dial lock (or upgrade to an electronic lock). Lifetime factory warranty is standard. Customization options include multiple textured or gloss paint colors, three hardware color options, and interior lighting/organization upgrades.

Shallow-depth gun safe for tight spaces

Browning HTR23 Hunter Series Closet Gun Safe

$2,709

Browning calls this the "closet" safe because of its reduced depth, not its overall footprint. At 19.5" deep it's noticeably shallower than a typical gun safe (24" to 30" deep), which lets it fit against a wall inside a walk-in closet, in a narrow bedroom nook, or in any tight room where a standard-depth safe would stick out too far. At 29.5" wide by 60" tall, it will not fit inside most small reach-in closets, so measure your space before you order. Made in the USA at Browning's plant in Provo, Utah, and holds 23 total long guns (16 inside + 7 on the door).

Fire protection is genuinely serious for a closet-sized safe: 80 minutes at 1,550°F or 95 minutes at 1,200°F, using Browning's ThermaBlock system. Security includes a 12-gauge steel body, 1-1/4" formed door, nine 1" bolts (6 active + 3 deadbolts), and 3-way boltwork. UL-listed electronic lock with programmable combination.

Best fit: Homeowners who want the safe out of sight, apartment or condo dwellers with limited floor space, anyone who prefers concealment as a first line of defense before mechanical security kicks in.

Key specs: 60" H x 29.5" W x 19.5" D, 485 lbs, 11.48 cubic feet, holds 23 total long guns. Full DPX Storage System included with quick-access barrel rack and pistol pouches on the door.

Patriotic aesthetic gun safe

Browning HTR33 Hunter Patriotic Gun Safe Special Edition

$3,119

Same core Browning HTR series build as the HTR23, sized up to hold 33 long guns (7 on the door), with the Patriotic Special Edition graphics package. American flag graphics on the door and inside back panel, 3-spoke black chrome handle, and the same USA-made construction as the rest of the Hunter series.

Fire protection matches the HTR23: 80 minutes at 1,550°F or 95 minutes at 1,200°F. Security specs are also similar: 12-gauge body, 1-1/4" formed door, nine 1" bolts (6 active), 3-way boltwork, UL-listed electronic lock, and Pry-Stop end bolts for additional pry resistance. The DPX Door Storage System comes with a quick-access barrel rack and pistol storage pouches; CMS Shelving System handles handgun storage inside.

Best fit: Homeowners who want a full-size gun safe with an American-made aesthetic that reflects their values. Also the right pick if you own 20+ long guns and need the extra capacity over the HTR23.

Key specs: 60" H x 29.5" W x 24.5" D, 615 lbs, 14.35 cubic feet interior, holds 33 long guns. Built-in electrical outlet for lighting or dehumidifier rod.

Not Sure Which One Fits Your Situation?

Every one of these safes is a legitimate answer to a specific problem. The best pick isn't the biggest, the most expensive, or the one with the highest fire rating in the abstract.
