August is here, which means college and other schools will soon be back in session. Students headed back to college will be bringing with them thousands of dollars worth of electronics and other valuables. College campuses aim to keep their students safe with security cameras and identification cards. But it's still largely up to you to keep your electronics and other valuables safe and secure.

Dorm rooms are typically not the most secure places for your valuable items. Items such as laptops, wallets, keys, passports, cash, jewelry, cell phones, tablets, and even cameras are all vulnerable to theft.

As anyone who has gone to college and lived in a dorm room knows, you’re living in very small quarters with a bunch of other college students in a building that often has pretty relaxed security measures. My college dorm had key-card entry, but that didn’t stop people from propping open the door to let others in, or letting in a stranger who swears they’re just going up to see a friend.

It is easy to think of your child’s dorm room as a safe space. After all, most dorms will require a card key simply to get into the building, and what modern college doesn't employ security guards?

With laptop computers and smart cell phones being more commonplace in society, an emphasis needs to be placed on security in order to protect the most valuable and personal information stored within these devices.
