Better still, some brands go a step further and have their fire ratings verified by an independent lab such as Intertek (ETL). Look for an established company with a strong track record and customer reviews that support its claims.
Testing temperatures vary. Fire test temperatures range from 1,200°F to 1,800°F or higher depending on the standard and manufacturer. Do not assume all fire ratings test at the same temperature.
Duration matters more than the temperature number. A safe rated to withstand 1,200°F for 90 minutes provides more total protection than one rated for 1,700°F at 30 minutes, because most structure fires last longer than 30 minutes. For a garage, we recommend at least a 60-minute rating. If your home is within about 15 minutes of a fire department, 60 minutes is usually sufficient. Rural properties with longer response times should lean toward 90 or 120 minutes.

The garage is the path of least resistance into most homes. Attached-garage pedestrian doors are often hollow-core and poorly deadbolted. Overhead doors can be bypassed. And a safe visible through an open garage door tells every delivery driver, neighbor, and passerby exactly what you own.
This makes the safe's burglary rating and its physical placement both important.
UL RSC (Residential Security Container) is the baseline rating for most gun safes. It verifies that the safe resists entry for 5 minutes of net working time using common hand tools. For most homeowners with a standard firearms collection, RSC is a reasonable starting point.
TL-15 and TL-30 are true burglary ratings for high-security safes. TL-15 withstands 15 minutes and TL-30 withstands 30 minutes of net working time against power tools, drills, and pry bars, which makes them far more resistant than RSC. In practice, though, very few manufacturers build a TL rating into a gun safe, the models that exist carry a steep premium, and they are more protection than most collections need. For the large majority of garage owners, an RSC-rated safe is the right call. A TL rating is worth considering only if you are storing a genuinely high-value collection, particularly in a detached or less-visible structure where a break-in could go unnoticed for longer.
For context on what each rating tier protects: an RSC-rated safe covers up to $15,000 in insurable value without a burglar alarm, or up to $30,000 with one. A TL-15 covers up to $100,000 without an alarm, or up to $200,000 with one.
A note on insurance: Standard homeowners policies typically cap firearm theft losses at a low sublimit, often around $2,500. If your collection exceeds that, you likely need a scheduled firearms rider or floater. The safe's burglary rating is one of the factors insurers evaluate when writing that coverage. Check with your carrier.
Placement matters as much as the rating. Position your safe where it cannot be seen from the open garage door or through windows. Against a side wall, behind vehicles, or in a corner that requires entering the garage and closing the door to see. This is basic safe placement strategy, but it matters more in a garage because the overhead door exposes so much of the interior. Lock choice matters more in a garage than in a climate-controlled room. Temperature extremes and humidity affect electronic components differently than mechanical ones, and the environment should factor into your decision.

A mechanical dial is the most environmentally robust option because it has no batteries or electronic components to fail. An electronic keypad is faster and lets you set your own combination at any time without a locksmith.
Quality electronic locks emit an audible warning when the battery runs low, so a dead-battery lockout is almost always preventable. On UL-rated electronic locks, the battery can be changed externally by removing the keypad from the door. Many non-UL-rated locks include an external 9V power contact for temporary power if the battery dies, or a key override that opens the safe if the lock ever fails.
Biometric locks fall under the same UL Type 1 certification framework as electronic keypads, though not every biometric lock on the market actually carries that certification. Even on a model that does, fingerprint scanner performance is less consistent in a garage where your hands may be cold, dirty, or gloved.

What to Look for in a Garage Gun Safe
When evaluating a gun safe for garage placement, the environment drives the priorities.
Steel gauge. Gauge is inverse to thickness: 12-gauge is approximately 0.105 inches, 10-gauge is approximately 0.135 inches, and 7-gauge is approximately 0.187 inches.
