Thousands of homeowners and business owners store hard drives, USB drives, and backup tapes in a fire safe, then lose everything to a house fire anyway. The reason is straightforward: fire safes are built to protect paper, not electronic media. And paper survives temperatures that will melt or corrupt every hard drive you own.
A standard fire safe is rated to keep its interior below 350°F for one or two hours, which is enough to keep paper documents from combusting. But CDs, DVDs, magnetic tape, flash memory, and spinning hard drives start failing above 125°F. What Fails Above 125°F
- Hard disk drives (HDDs) — magnetic platters and read heads degrade; data becomes unreadable or corrupted
- Solid state drives (SSDs) — NAND flash cells break down; slightly more heat-tolerant than HDDs but still fail well before 350°F
- USB thumb drives and SD memory cards — same NAND flash limits
- CDs, DVDs, Blu-ray discs — polycarbonate warps and the reflective layer delaminates
- Magnetic backup tapes (LTO, DLT, 8mm, 4mm) — highly heat-sensitive; the coating deteriorates and tape stretches
- Photographs and film negatives — chemical layers stick together and image quality is destroyed
- Vinyl records — soften and warp permanently
